Per National Center for Education Statistic, in 2019-20, the number of students ages 3 to 21 who received special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was 7.3 million, or 14% of all public-school students. Among students receiving special education services, the most common category of disability (33%) was specific learning disabilities.
Each public-school child who receives special education and related services has an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Each IEP is designed for one student and is an individualized document. The program creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, and related personnel to work together to improve educational outcomes for children with disabilities. For parents or guardians who are not native in English, it is crucial for them to read the IEP documents in their native language, as each IEP is critical in the education of children with a disability.
At MLT, our IEP linguists have an in-depth understanding of relevant terminology and specialize in IEP content. We understand if parents or guardians don’t completely understand IEP documents, the risk to their student(s) can be significant. We also have designated proofers who proofread each document to make sure that phrasing and sentence structures are straightforward and easy to understand for the parents or guardians.
What is more, we adhere to best practices in protecting the confidentiality of children. For example, not only can certain staff access the documents but also, we perform data masking during the file pre-processing stage. In other words, only well-trained, core members have access to the content and sensitive information that is not relevant to translation would be masked.
